Make sure the very best talent applies for your vacancy

We write 4-6 job adverts a day for recruitment companies and they get great results from our work.

8 reasons why professional copy writing attracts more & better candidates

A job advert is no different from any other ad. It's there to get responses...

...Copywriters are trained & experienced in getting responses

When someone changes their job, so much about their life changes...

...so a job ad has to sell the role & the company really convincingly

Show how important the role is & opportunties for promotion

Demonstrate how impressive the company offering the role is

Highlight the great people they'll be working with & the team they'll join

And, most important, make sure they apply straight away

“We used to put real effort into colourful, attractive job descriptions before working with Mark and The Copy Writing Project. As we’re not professional copywriters, it was difficult.

When Mark and his team started writing our job adverts, we saw three big effects straight away.

First, the number of enquiries shot up.

Second, the quality of candidates rose sharply.

And third, candidates who responded to the adverts stayed enthusiastic.

Sometimes, when you get a really great job from a client, they'll send you pages and pages of responsibilities, candidate requirements, and more.

Mark and his team take this mass of information and boil it all down into a compelling, very readable advert that absolutely and accurately reflects the job.”

What turns most candidates off?

Most people are reasonably happy in their jobs. Sure, things could be better and there are some annoying things about where they work. But, they're used to it, they know everyone, and they're comfortable in the knowledge they can do what's asked of them day after day.

Better the devil you know, for many people. And, when they see a job advert, the following doesn't give them itchy feet...

Pages and pages of bulletpointed responsibilities - it's very hard to read and the bulletpoints tend to use the same words and phrases over and over again (e.g. "ensure", "make sure", "review", "update", "target", and many more)

A dry, unprepossessing company description - from which they can't necessarily see where they'll fit in.

Stating the obvious - if your candidate is applying for a position they have experience in, let's impress them with the exciting things about the role they don't know, not waste time with the stuff they do know.

What goes into the proven successful job advert writing technique we use?

It's very centred on the person, what they'll be doing and who they'll be doing it with. It really edifies the client. Companies have personalities too and we need to give an applicant an idea of the type of firm they'll be working at.

The ads are written with energy and pace. Every word we choose for an advert is there for a reason. Other key points we cover include:

500 words - that's the target. For most people, that's takes just over two minutes. The ideal length for grabbing attention and establishing interest.

Short, snappy text blocks when describing responsibilities and desired qualities - ideally, no more than 15 words a sentence and 3 sentences a paragraph. Big, heavy, tall blocks of text put people off.

Personality, engagement, belonging - every company is unique and it's important to share how your client engages with its staff and how it makes an employee feel a real sense of belonging.

The little details matter the most sometimes, like how close a workplace is to public transport & car parking and sharing exciting things about the location where they'll be working. This never takes up more than a couple of sentences in an advert but invaluable as part of the bigger picture.

Extra ingredients to bring to great job adverts

Grabby headline & opening

Great for grabbing attention and great for standing out on social media

About the employer

Intriguing, exciting employer description even if your client wants to remain anonymous

The role, the department & colleagues

Great job ads give a glimpse into the average working day & colleagues they share it with

The opportunity

People only jump out of their comfort zone when there's something great to jump into

Simple and jargon-free

We all speak in Plain English so there's no sense writing a complex, buzzword-filled ad.

"Time limited - apply now"

Let the applicant know how keen the employer is to get this role filled

Job adverts that convey the excitement and opportunity to a candidate

We love this work and it's one of the fastest growing areas of our business here at The Copy Writing Project. For client after client, we see the difference our contributions make in the quality of applicants they now get and their engagement in the process.

Every job advert is unique - no templates used. Each ad is fitted around the personality and voice of the recruitment consultancy using us. Real research, time, and effort goes into each job ad.
